There is a great demand for Adult Medical Day Care Centers throughout the United States because of the aging population in this country. With the graying population, there has been a shift away from the institutional care of nursing homes to community-based programs such as adult medical day care, home healthcare and assisted living. Home healthcare and assisted living have made their mark on the healthcare system; the popularity of adult medical day care is just starting to take roots as a viable alternative to institutional care and a drastic improvement in the quality of life for our senior citizen population.
Seniors Count is a company offering adult medical day care services to Medicaid recipients who are predominantly senior citizens. Adult day care centers are community-based programs designed to provide supervision in a group setting for functionally impaired adults. The centers come in two distinctive forms. The first is the "social model" center which is designed to alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation among older adults through the provision of recreational and social activities. Seniors Count falls under the second model type, the "medical model." This model provides health and rehabilitation services in addition to recreational services.
Seniors Count is designed to serve adults who are physically impaired or mentally confused and who may require supervision, increased social opportunities, assistance with personal care or other daily living activities. Services include transportation to and from the home, one or two nutriotionally balanced meals, rehabilitation therapies, general physical exercise, activities, arts and crafts, games, personal care, nursing care, assistance with medication dosage, outreach services to the community and special programming. Depending upon the health of the attendees, special programs may include trips such as grocery shopping or day outings to shows and community events.
The cost for a person to attend an adult day care center is generally paid for privately by the individual or through state Medicaid programs. Medicare does not provide coverage. Generally, health insurance providers do not cover adult day care services, although some of the newer, long-term care policies are beginning to include provisions for this type of care.
